NZ customs and import relief
For incoming residents qualifying as "transferring residence," household effects can be imported duty- and GST-free under Concession Reference 80. Conditions: applicant has lived outside NZ for 21+ months continuously, items have been owned and used for 12+ months prior to arrival, items are for personal use, applicant arrives in NZ within 12 months of the goods. Documentation: passport, residence visa, packing list, NZ Customs Service declarations.
We prepare documentation in Malaysia; destination partner handles MPI inspection and customs clearance.
Cities served
North Island: Auckland (CBD, all suburbs from North Shore to South Auckland), Wellington (Wellington City, Lower Hutt, Porirua), Hamilton, Tauranga, Palmerston North.
South Island: Christchurch, Dunedin, Queenstown, Nelson.
Inland delivery from port adds 2-5 days for North Island, 3-7 days for South Island destinations.
Pricing — what to expect
NZ routes price by volume and destination port. Indicative: 20ft FCL Auckland RM 26,000-32,000. 40ft FCL RM 38,000-46,000. Wellington and Christchurch slightly higher due to longer transit and inland costs. MPI inspection fees and any treatment costs are payable at destination per NZ rules. We quote everything we control upfront.
Vehicle and pet shipping to NZ
Vehicle shipping to New Zealand requires NZ Transport Agency compliance certification — most ordinary cars are not economically worth shipping. We'll be honest during survey.
Pet relocation to New Zealand is one of the most demanding routes globally — multi-month preparation, mandatory quarantine, strict titre-test windows. Plan 6+ months ahead. Pet relocation is handled through specialist partners; coordination through Florette PM keeps pet timing aligned with the household move.
MPI packing protocols — what we do differently
New Zealand Ministry for Primary Industries inspects all incoming containers for: soil and organic matter on outdoor furniture, garden tools, and footwear; untreated timber; food items and food residue (including dried spices); used camping, golf, and outdoor sports equipment with organic debris. Our pre-export packing process addresses each of these: outdoor items cleaned to soil-free standard and wrapped; all food removed before packing without exception; timber with ISPM 15 treatment documentation where required; used outdoor and sports equipment inspected item by item. A failed MPI inspection incurs treatment fees (NZD 1,500-3,000) plus container offloading and reloading costs — weeks of delay that disrupts your settling-in timeline. Prevention at the Malaysia end is the only reliable control point.
NZ vs. Australia — similarities and key differences
Both countries operate strict biosecurity and similar personal-effects duty-relief schemes. Key differences: NZ transit time is 3-6 days longer than equivalent Australian ports. NZ's Concession Reference 80 requires 21+ months abroad (Australia requires only 12 months for UPE eligibility). NZ pet quarantine requirements are broadly comparable in complexity. NZ vehicle compliance (NZTA certification) is as restrictive as Australian ADR. For household-effects-only moves without cars or pets, the process complexity is similar — both require careful pre-export packing and correct documentation, and both are routine for our team.
The Malaysia-NZ client profile
NZ routes from Malaysia primarily serve: Malaysian nationals on New Zealand Skilled Migrant or Residence Class visas; Malaysian-Chinese families following children who studied at Auckland, Canterbury, or Otago; and Indian-origin professionals from Malaysia on NZ employer-sponsored or skilled-worker visas in IT, healthcare, and engineering — sectors where NZ has actively recruited from Malaysia and Singapore over the past decade. Steady move volume from Klang Valley, Penang, and increasingly from JB.
